Why I Created Retreats (Hint: It's Not Self-Care)
How military Chaplains shaped me - and why real healing isn’t about yoga, journaling, or self-care.
A piece of research changed the way I lead, coach, parent, relate, and live. It said this: Your brain isn’t fixed. It’s still changing – every day. And it does that your entire life.
For decades, scientists believed that your neural pathways locked in during childhood - that real change became harder with age, especially emotional or behavioral change. But that’s outdated. Discoveries in neuroplasticity have shown that the brain can form new neural connections at any age - but only when certain conditions are present.
Three of the biggest levers?
Repetition paired with emotional intensity
Brainwave states that increase receptivity
Multi-sensory experiences that go beyond verbal logic
Translation: If you want to stop looping the same patterns, insight alone isn’t enough. You have to experience something different. And that experience has to speak the language of the nervous system, not just the mind. This isn’t just science. It’s also deeply personal.
One moment in particular still echoes in my memory. Six years ago, on my deployment to Poland, I visited Auschwitz. It was led by a military Chaplain, and we weren’t just there to sightsee. We were there to feel something we couldn’t learn in a classroom. We entered Auschwitz in silence and left different people than we came in. And in the quiet that followed, as we made our way back to the bus to return to our base, our Chaplain turned to us and gave us each a number. He separated us into groups, one group decidedly smaller than the other. He pointed to the larger group and said: “You are the ones that wouldn’t have survived Auschwitz.” I was in the larger group. That moment seared into my brain. And it planted a seed - one I wouldn’t fully understand until years later.
Vacations. Spa trips. Girls’ trips. Adventures. I tried them all. Each one has been instrumental in its own way to my growth, restoration, and re-energization along the way. Yet nothing has come close to the transformational moments and growth that sticks for me in the way that a military staff ride has. A staff ride is one of the most powerful forms of military leadership training - and most civilians have never even heard of it. It’s not a classroom. It’s not a lecture. It’s a full-body, boots-on-the-ground experience.
Here’s how it works:
You take a group of leaders - usually Officers or senior NCOs - and bring them to the site of a historic battle or mission. Think Gettysburg. Normandy. You walk the terrain. You stand where decisions were made, where people lived or died. And then you study it in layers. What happened? Why did it happen? What were the leaders facing in that moment - mentally, emotionally, tactically? What did they miss? What did they carry?
It’s not about glorifying war. It’s about understanding leadership under pressure. It’s about decision-making when the stakes are life and death. Staff rides strip away theory and force you into lived empathy. They make you wrestle with moral ambiguity. They make you see how terrain, timing, emotion, and human limitation all collide under pressure. They stay with you - because they’re not just intellectual. They’re embodied.
They’re the kind of thing that shifts how you lead, how you see people, and how you carry the weight of responsibility. That’s why I use the same experiential structure inside my retreats. Because change doesn’t come from talking about hard things. It comes from walking through them - with clarity, reflection, and safe integration. That’s what a staff ride is.
Why Retreats? Why This Way?
Most people assume I created retreats to help women “unplug” or “reset.” But that’s not the truth. The real reason goes back almost 18 years, involves a couple of overseas trips, and involves military Chaplains.
When I was stationed in Germany, I deployed to Iraq. It was gritty, exhausting, and defining in ways I couldn’t fully name at the time. But after that deployment - when most people would’ve opted for rest or a reset - I jumped on something else: a military Chaplain-led trip to Israel.
It wasn’t a vacation. It was a staff ride. A leadership immersion. A spiritual gut-check. We walked the old stone streets of Jerusalem. Took a boat across the Sea of Galilee. Stood where history collided with faith and conflict. Not just to see it - but to feel it. To reflect. To wrestle. To integrate. It wasn’t just about what happened there. It was about what was happening in us. The Chaplain spoke fluent Hebrew and was able to translate and explain in ways that gets missed in most books. We walked through history and were given information about it through actual context, felt our feet on the ground and saw with our eyes and imagined what it must have been like.
Here’s what made these experiences powerful: it was led by Chaplains who understood something that a lot of leaders - and a lot of healers - miss:
Transformation doesn’t happen in sterile environments. It happens in the terrain. With your boots on the ground, your heart cracked open, and your body finally slowing down long enough to register what it’s been holding. Through embodied, emotionally honest, multi-sensory experience that marks the soul and rewires the brain.
When I was burned out, I kept searching for some sort of relief. I went on vacation. I took a spa trip. I went on girls’ trips. I went on some adventures. They helped – but not enough. Then I saw wellness retreats and thought – jackpot. This is what I’ve been needing in my life. But the more I searched through them the more I realized they all consisted of yoga, meditation, human design, and “spiritual” things that don’t align with my values.
That’s when I realized: High-functioning women need staff rides too. Not just a workshop or coaching module. They need spaces that hit the nervous system level. Spaces where their body - not just their intellect - can finally exhale.
That’s what I’ve built. I took little bits of adventure, girls’ trips, and staff rides, added in the neuroscience of transformation, and crafted it into my retreat experience.
What Makes These Retreats Different?
Every retreat I lead is built using the REWIRE Method - a five-step neuroscience-based process for nervous system rewiring that honors the body, not bypasses it. Here’s how that looks in real life:
1. Regulate - Calm the body, restore safety
We open each day with NEUROFIT balance exercises. These are non-yoga breathwork and somatic tools to shift out of survival mode and into regulation. You’re deeply nourished with gut-friendly, anti-inflammatory meals prepared by a private chef - each bite supporting blood sugar, hormones, and inflammation from the inside out. Our trauma-informed orientation sets the tone for clarity, calm, and felt safety from the first hour.
2. Reorient - Shift perception from threat to possibility
Once the body feels safe, the brain becomes teachable. We use intention-setting, Survival Archetype insights, and guided focus work to reprogram the brain to scan for safety, not just danger. Adventure is woven in - not to perform, but to reawaken trust in your own agency. Hiking, lava caves, 4x4s, snowmobiling, hot air balloon rides, and horseback riding aren’t just fun. They’re nervous system expansion - delivered in doses your body can handle.
3. Recode - Interrupt the patterns that keep you stuck
We guide you through symbolic pattern interrupters and multi-sensory experiences that help release subconscious survival loops. Integration workshops bring gentle awareness to what's no longer serving you - without overexposure or overwhelm.
4. Reinforce - Anchor the new pathways
Change only sticks if it’s reinforced. We celebrate micro-wins, build somatic trust, and use co-regulation to stabilize new patterns. You’ll be surrounded by other women who get it - no performance, no emotional flooding. Just quiet, fierce belonging. Nourishment, movement, and daily rhythms become your new normal, not a retreat high.
5. Repeat - Sustain the shift with rhythm and ritual
Before you leave, we close with a final debrief and walk you through a 72-hour reentry protocol and personalized longer integration plan designed to make real life feel like an extension of retreat - not a crash back into chaos. Post-retreat coaching is available if you want continued support - but there’s no pressure. Just rhythm.
This is why the change lasts. Because it’s not just a moment. It’s a rewiring.
If you’ve ever felt like you should be fine - but your body tells a different story...
If you’ve read all the books, tried all the protocols, but still can’t sleep, can’t focus, can’t feel safe...
If you keep bracing for impact, even in calm rooms...
Let me say this clearly:
You’re not broken. You’re braced.
And your brain is ready to rewire, if you give it the right conditions. That’s what we do here. Not performative self-care. Not spiritual fluff.
Real nervous system relief. Real rewiring. Real rebuilding.
Because you’re not here to bounce back. You’re here to build something new.
